At Huka Lodge, the Christmas decorations are up and shimmering, the wine cellar is stocked full, and Executive Chef Paul Froggatt’s special festive season menu has been carefully crafted to show off the Taupō region’s premium fare.

Each Christmas Chef Paul shares his much-loved family recipes for the enjoyment of the Huka Lodge guests, family, and friends.
This year Chef Paul is pleased to share his cranberry mince pie recipe. The pies can be baked ahead of time and keep well in the fridge sealed in an airtight container.

Cruising Lake Taupō

Guests at Huka Lodge can opt for a luxury cruise of Lake Taupō, a gentle and stylish way to experience the scenic beauty of the Singapore-sized freshwater lake taking in magnificent lake and mountain views. The vast lake is often compared to an inland ocean, complete with picturesque bays, caves and beaches, and white caps on a windy day. On a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Mounts Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro can be spotted on the horizon at the lake’s southern end.

Fly Fishing Season Begins

To celebrate this exciting time for fishing enthusiasts, Huka Lodge has partnered with the best local fishing experts, Chris Jolly Outdoors, to create a special fly fishing package available for the month of July.

Huka Lodge has been a top destination for fly fishers for over a century, with the lodge originally being established by Irishman Alan Pye in 1924 as a base camp for the regions expeditions. Today, guests can experience the same legendary trout-filled waterways around Taupo that attracted anglers from around the world even as far back as 1922.

In Profile: Kerry Molloy

Leading Huka Lodge over the last seven years, Kerry has become known for his dedication and attention to detail. Orchestrating a famously boutique and full complement guest experience is no easy task, but the continued global recognition and reputation for outstanding service are a testament to Kerry and his trust in his team . We sat down with Kerry to hear more about his past, his role, and his connection to New Zealand’s most historic luxury lodge.

Where did your journey begin Kerry?

I have pretty much always worked in hospitality, my first job was as a porter in a large hotel. I then moved to London for 14 years and worked in some lovely townhouse hotels before joining the Metropolitan Police for four years, that was a slightly different type of customer service! I did a stint at Intercontinental Sydney before moving back to New Zealand to work at all three of The Robertson Lodges, before the irresistible offer came up to jump to the competition at Huka Lodge.

Renovation Plans Announced

Affectionately known by Kiwis as ‘the grand dame of luxury lodges’ and as the preferred holiday lodgings for the world’s rich, famous and royal over the decades, Huka Lodge is one of the newest properties in the esteemed Baillie Lodges collection

To accommodate the substantial redesign and build, Huka Lodge will farewell its last guests on April 30 next year and will reopen on December 1, 2024.

Baillie Lodges founder James Baillie will lead the project, partnering with esteemed New Zealand-born interior designer Virginia Fisher, first appointed by Huka Lodge’s previous, long-term owner Alex van Heeren in 1984 to direct the lodge’s look and feel. Since then, Virginia has led the distinctively grand style of Huka Lodge with its traditional lodging spirit, intimate interior spaces, private nooks for lounging and dining and furnishings with signature tartan finishes.
